Heroes Among Us begins 2015 schedule

Air Force, 1st Gulf War and Khe Sanh nights are just a few of the scheduled events listed on the Marine Corps League's Heroes Among Us speaker series, beginning its 2015 schedule May 29 in Veterans Memorial Park.

"Heroes Among Us highlights the veterans who live in our community," said Ed Rouse, public affairs officer for the Pensacola Marine Corps League and the Heroes Among Us committee. "They are truly heroes among us, living quietly among us."

The speaker series, running from May to October, is in its third year and is backed by local community organizations such as Navy Federal Credit Union, Baptist Hospital and The Marine Snow Bird Association of Orange Beach and board members such as Circuit Judge Gary Bergosh, State Representative Clay Ingram and Studer Group President Quint Studer, and many more.

The series always brings in a plethora of experienced military veterans across eras and wars, and allows them to share their stories while communing with other veterans and those wanting to learn more about our country's military from people who lived it.

"These are people we go to church with, people who we shop with in our stores — they're the unsung heroes," Rouse said.

This year's series will begin with Air Force night and feature two senior Air Force officers with combat experience. Coast Guard Night will include two WWII veterans, one who chased Nazi submarines and a retired colonel who landed at Normandy and fought in WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Air Force Night will also welcome such dignitaries as Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward as well Marine Corps League State Commandant and National Marine Corps League representative William Cona, United States Marine Corps Lt. Charles Pitman, U.S. Army and Purple Heart Association Commander Col. Eustics Shiver and USMC local Commandant of the Marine League Col. Christopher Holzworth.

Heroes Among Us is free and open to everyone. Each speaker engagement will be at Veterans Memorial Park 200 South 10th Ave. In the event of inclement weather, engagements will be at Rosie's in Seville Quarter, 130 E. Government St.
